Ocean / Air Service
November 2006 - March 2007
In addition to service to the marine and rail facilities of the Port of Houston, Palletized Trucking also provides specialized service to Bush Intercontinental Airport. This capability was called upon in late 2006-early 2007 to complete the timely delivery of critical components to an overseas manufacturer.
RTI Energy Systems selected Palletized Trucking to transport six riser pullers that were manufactured in Houston for a new deep water offshore platform that was being constructed in Norway. Each riser was 130 feet long and weighed approximately 30,000 pounds. The weight and length of the riser pullers required a transport unit consisting of a prime mover and 14 lines of Goldhöfer hydraulic platform equipment to fully support each unit.
Shipments of the riser pullers began in late November, 2006. The first four units were shipped at the rate of one every two weeks as production was completed. These risers were delivered to the Port of Houston City Docks for ocean transport to Norway.
Fabrication of the last two riser pullers was completed in February and March, 2007. To meet the platform construction schedule, these two units had to be air freighted to Norway. When each of these last two units was completed, Palletized Trucking transported them to Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport to be loaded onto an Antonov AN-124. Transferring the riser puller to the Antonov required backing into the plane's cargo bay where the unit was lifted off the transport unit.
All six riser pullers arrived in Norway within the delivery deadlines, and construction of the platform proceeded without interruption.
